Taiwan Ministry of Education Endorses Certiport IC³ as ICT Standard for Students at Signing Ceremony
More than 1 million technical and vocational students from over 100 schools could earn the international credential by 2013
TAIPEI — March 12, 2009
Certiport today announced the Taiwan Ministry of Education (MOE) endorsed Certiport Internet and Computing Core Certification (IC³®) as the national standard for information and communication technologies (ICT).The globally recognized digital literacy certification program is included as part of a five-year plan in which the MOE will require all technical and vocational students—more than 1 million—to achieve at least one internationally accepted credential by graduation. IC³ will be available as the sole ICT credential endorsed under the initiative.
"Strengthening the educational backbone of a country through the adoption of rigorous standards is the cornerstone of producing future generations of high academic achievers," said David Saedi, president and CEO of Certiport. "With the adoption of the global IC³ standard, Taiwan has ensured that teachers and students are equipped with the most current and relevant knowledge and skills, especially related to information and communication technologies."
"Certiport IC³ satisfies our requirements for developing and validating essential computing and Internet skills," said Dr. Ming-Wing Chang, director of the department of education in the Taoyuan County Government. "We are confident that students who earn this certification will possess knowledge and skills that will make them more effective workers both here and abroad."
As an incentive to develop the skills and earn the credential, $50 (USD) will be awarded to students that achieve IC³ certification. More than 100 institutions will be able to take advantage of earmarked funding for the program. An additional $20 (USD) from international funding resources will also be allocated to support the program when a student earns IC³.
The IC³ endorsement comes after an exhaustive review in which members of a MOE committee analyzed detailed information on the validity of the global standard, investigated the rigor of its development and inquired as to its adoption by organizations in 80 countries worldwide. IC³ is already widely used by educators in Taiwan, including a program for on-going teacher development in which more than 2,000 teachers, deans and principals have been certified.
