CompTIA launched the Strata certificate program to serve as a critical stepping stone to advanced technical learning. Certiport and CompTIA recently announced a strategic partnership to aggressively enhance the delivery of the Strata IT Fundamentals exam through Certiport's expansive network of more than 10,000 centers in 142 countries worldwide.

The exam measures an individual's knowledge of basic IT terminology and skills, including:

  • Setting up a basic PC work station
  • Installing software
  • Identifying compatibility issues
  • Recognizing and preventing basic security risks

Students earning the Strata IT Fundamentals certificate have the proven knowledge to identify computer hardware basics, resolve compatibility issues and common errors, perform software installation, assess security risks, and perform some Green IT and preventative maintenance practices.

For institutions, the certificate program not only provides a competitive advantage, but sets out to improve success to technology programs for organizations looking to attract and retain students interested in IT careers.

"It has become clear that digital literacy training and certification programs are a critical requirement for individuals who want to be competitive and successful in the IT job market," said Quinn Sutton, senior vice president, Certiport. "Through our certification pathway, starting with basic digital literacy and building more advanced skills, we provide higher education with the tools they need to significantly advance their students to career readiness at a professional level."

The Strata IT Fundamentals complements Certiport's Internet and Computing Core Certification (IC³®), providing a necessary foundation that allows users to transition perfectly to the exam. Individuals seeking a career in IT, particularly interested in hardware platforms and PCs, are well suited for the IC³—Strata pathway and may choose to pursue higher certifications in CompTIA A+, and with specialized experience, CompTIA Network+ and CompTIA Security+.

"Armed with the Strata certificate, students have the potential to begin a career working with PCs, hardware and software installation," said Terry Erdle, senior vice president, CompTIA. "This new exam not only signifies an individual has mastered the core fundamentals of hardware platforms, but also prepares students to achieve more advanced Plus-series CompTIA certifications."

Students can begin taking the Strata IT Fundamentals exam in English at any Certiport Center worldwide beginning in August 2010, with additional languages to follow.
