Training Students to Become Business Problem Solvers
BACKGROUND
Tokyo Metropolitan
Dainishougyou High School, located in the suburbs of Tokyo, Japan, aims to
train its students in how to solve business problems and challenges using
the Internet and computing skills in an actual business environment.
CERTIFICATION SOLUTION
In 2003, the
high school introduced the Certiport Internet and Computing Core
Certification (IC³ ®) exams into its Information Processing course
curriculum. Since then, all students who take the Information Processing
course also take the IC³ exams.
Hiroshi Kawai, schoolteacher and instructor, explains the reasons for introducing
IC³. "Even though students are familiar with the
operation of Microsoft Word and Excel, they might not have all the accurate,
fundamental computing knowledge. A set of IC³ exams includes all computing
operations and Internet literacy required on a daily basis."
Kawai also recommends the IC³ exams for all teachers who are committed
to IT education. He adds, "By acquiring the globally recognized IC³ certification,
students gain confidence and trust in themselves. By the same token, the
business community is secure in the knowledge that job candidates certified
in IC³ possess a proven computing skill, and it's also an indicator
of the student's effort and positive desire to learn."
RESULT
Although the employment
situation is still very tight in Japan, the employment rate for Tokyo
Metropolitan Dainishougyou High School students who seek jobs is 100%.
Kawai concludes, "We feel our school's effort to help students
acquire certifications such as IC³, plus students' own dedication
to acquire IT certificates, will serve as a success model for other schools' IT
education efforts."
