The first time you save a new document, you are required to give the file a name and specify a location for the new document to be saved. Even if you simply press the Save button, you are really using the Save As function to save the document as a specific name, in a specific location.
Thereafter, every time you click the Save button (or press Ctrl + S), you are replacing the previous version of your document with the current version. In effect, you are saving over your document. So think of Save as Save Over.
If you want to keep the original (or subsequent) version of your document intact, as well as save a new, revised version, you will need to save the new version using Save As. To do this, choose File » Save As from the drop-down menu. Now, as with the first time you save a document, you will need to give the file a new name and specify a location.
