Rather than manually numbering or bulleting a list, it is generally much easier to use Word's automatic numbering feature. If you use this method and need to add or delete list items later, the numbers will automatically update for you.
When you are ready to begin a numbered list, click on the numbering button to turn it on before you begin your list. When you are finished with your list, you can either press Enter twice or click the numbering button again to turn the feature off.
If you need to start or continue a list from a number other than one, with numbering on: click Format » Bullets and Numbering » "Numbered" tab » Customize. In the "Start at" field, enter the number of your choice and click OK. Within this same window, you may also change the font and tab position if you wish.
The button to the right of the numbering button is the "Bullets" button. Pressing this places a symbol at the beginning of each line. The symbol or "bullet" can easily be changed to relate to your topic by following nearly the same path as before: Format » Bullets and Numbering » "Bulleted" tab » Customize.
Then, if you click the Character button in this window, a new window will pop up to display several symbol choices. You may change the default set of symbol choices by selecting a different font type in the "font" field. Below are a few favorites:

When the numbering feature is turned back on, the numbering will continue from the prior list, and the following "AutoCorrect" icon will pop up. Clicking on the AutoCorrect icon will display options for restarting the numbering sequence.
