Certiport Honors Manitoban as 2008 Champion of Digital Literacy

Through efforts of trainer David Coopsammy, Portage Correctional Center offers digital skills, credentials and hope to incarcerated women

Certiport today announced David Coopsammy, a trainer with Portage Correctional Center in Manitoba, Canada, has been selected as a 2008 Champion of Digital Literacy. The program recognizes the outstanding contributions of individuals throughout the world who champion the cause of digital literacy. Coopsammy garnered institutional support and private donations to renovate a cafeteria and repurpose it as a computer training lab where inmates can gain computing and Internet skills and achieve the globally recognized Certiport Internet and Computing Core Certification (IC³®).Estrada Sandoval believes digitally skilled and credentialed students will help energize Guatemala’s economy. "To prepare our students to get jobs, we prepare them with ICT knowledge. It’s very important for students, and they are going to get better salaries with these skills," he said.

"We felt it important to provide our residents with skill[s] that they can use when they leave—and a sense of confidence to continue learning," said Coopsammy. "I believe the positive results we have seen so far will continue."

Champions of Digital Literacy was established to honor the exemplary efforts of individuals across the globe who transform the landscape of education and employment through championing the adoption of digital literacy standards. Each year, nominations are received from around the world and award recipients are selected based on the measurable scope and social impact of their efforts.
