Aboriginal Astronaut Headlines Special Track for Native Populations at Certiport PATHWAYS 2009 in Toronto

International conference on digital skills and certification to host—"Uniting and Empowering Indigenous Peoples through Digital Technologies"

SALT LAKE CITY — July 20, 2009

>Certiport today announced the first Native American in space, astronaut John Herrington, will provide the keynote address for Certiport PATHWAYS™ 2009, an international conference on the power of digital skills and certification for individuals, organizations and nations. Herrington will also be a featured guest of the “Uniting and Empowering Indigenous Peoples through Digital Technologies” track of the conference, sponsored by the Four Worlds International Institute (FWII), an organization dedicated to cultural respect and cooperation with all members of the human family.

First reporting to NASA in 1996, Herrington, a member of the Chickasaw Nation, was chosen as part of the 2002 Space Shuttle Endeavor mission that touched down to deliver a new crew and special equipment to the International Space Station. During his time with NASA, he logged over 330 hours in space, including spacewalks totaling nearly 20 hours.

To be held July 31 and August 1 in Toronto, more than 250 will attend Certiport PATHWAYS 2009, including student participants in the Championship Round of the Worldwide Competition on Microsoft® Office, key members of the Certiport Partner Network, this year’s inductees into the Champions of Digital Literacy Hall of Fame and other distinguished guests. Session topics are available for review at www.certiport.com/pathways under the “PATHWAYS 2009 Agenda link.” FWII is part of Skilled2Succeed, a collaborative partnership that empowers self-sustainability through training and certification.

The Champions of Digital Literacy Hall of Fame was established in 2005 to honor the exemplary efforts of individuals across the globe that champion the adoption of digital literacy standards. Each year, nominations are received from around the world and award recipients are selected based on the measurable scope and social impact of their efforts. The Champions of Digital Literacy Inspiration Award is given in recognition of the visionary leadership required to transform communities and nations through digital literacy initiatives.
