Certiport to Induct Libyan Businessman and Scottish Educator into Champions of Digital Literacy Hall of Fame

The two are also among six finalists for the program’s highest honor to be announced at the Certiport PATHWAYS 2009 international conference

SALT LAKE CITY — July 15, 2009

Ray Kelly, CEOCertiport today announced Khaled El Hamedi, chairman of ENG Holding Libya, and Deryck Nutley, manager of the IT Providers Consortium in Scotland (ITPCS), will be recognized for their efforts in promoting digital literacy. The pair has been selected for induction into this year’s Champions of Digital Literacy Hall of Fame and are candidates with four others for the highest honor of the recognition program: the Inspiration Award.

“The exemplary work of each inductee into the Hall of Fame reminds us that individuals can make a difference in bridging the Digital Divide in their communities and countries,” said Ray Kelly, president and CEO of Certiport. “Mr. Nutley’s push for the creation of a consortium brought digital literacy and global credentials to several Scotland colleges while Mr. El Hamedi has helped accelerate Libya’s entrance into the information-based economy following a difficult period of embargo.”

  • Khaled El Hamedi: In 2004, following the removal of the U.S. trade embargo, it became increasingly apparent that Libya needed to reinvest in the country’s infrastructure and re-skill its citizenry for 21st Century jobs. El Hamedi elected to bring the Certiport Internet and Computing Core Certification (IC³®) digital literacy program into Libya as a crucial bridge for developing current and relevant skills. To date, he has helped train and certify more than 30,000 public and private workers in his country.
  • Deryck Nutley: Nutley helped spearhead the creation of ITPCS to link the Scottish Qualifications Authority (SQA) national certifications to other more widely recognized industry certifications, enabling participating students to receive the benefits of both. Since 2004, he has managed and helped grow the consortium to triple its initial size to include 76 percent (25) of the colleges in Scotland that offer computer learning.

El Hamedi, Nutley and others will be welcomed into the Hall of Fame preceding the announcement of the Inspiration Award winner Aug. 1 at the Certiport PATHWAYS™ 2009 international conference. The Champions of Digital Literacy Hall of Fame was established in 2005 to honor the exemplary efforts of individuals across the globe that champion the adoption of digital literacy standards. Each year, nominations are received from around the world and award recipients are selected based on the measurable scope and social impact of their efforts. The Champions of Digital Literacy Inspiration Award is given in recognition of the visionary leadership required to transform communities and nations through digital literacy initiatives.
