Certiport to Induct Renowned Chinese Professor and Japanese Social Worker into Champions of Digital Literacy Hall of Fame

The two are also among six finalists for the program's highest honor to be announced at the Certiport PATHWAYS 2009 international conference

SALT LAKE CITY — June 29, 2009

Certiport today announced Professor Haoqiang Tan, chairman of the Association of Computer Fundamentals China on Higher Education (AFCEC), and Mariko Horigome, a social welfare counselor for Tokyo Colony in Japan, will be recognized for their efforts in promoting digital literacy. The pair has been selected for induction into this year's Champions of Digital Literacy Hall of Fame and are candidates with four others for the highest honor of the recognition program: the Inspiration Award.

"The exemplary work of each inductee into the Hall of Fame reminds us that individuals can make a difference in bridging the Digital Divide in their communities and countries," said Ray Kelly, president and CEO of Certiport. "Ms. Horigome has helped develop and certify the employability skills of physically impaired Tokyo citizens while Professor Tan continues to provide digital literacy instruction to millions in China."

  • Professor Haoqiang Tan: Known as the "Father of Computing" in China, Professor Tan first realized the potential of computers to impact modern life when he began studying them in 1978. Since that time, he has instructed millions of Chinese on the finer points of computing through television and his work as an author. Last year, Professor Tan became a key member of the Global Digital Literacy Council, which revised and updated the worldwide digital literacy standard found in Certiport Internet and Computing Core Certification (IC³®).
  • Mariko Horigome: Tokyo Colony provides equal opportunities for disabled individuals through training, skill development and employment services. Horigome's work in the IT Center for Persons with Disabilities project promotes digital literacy as a way to boost disabled individuals' opportunities to enter the workforce and more fully participate in society.

Professor Tan, Horigome and others will be welcomed into the Hall of Fame preceding the announcement of the Inspiration Award winner Aug. 1 at the Certiport PATHWAYS™ 2009 international conference. The Champions of Digital Literacy Hall of Fame was established in 2005 to honor the exemplary efforts of individuals across the globe that champion the adoption of digital literacy standards. Each year, nominations are received from around the world and award recipients are selected based on the measurable scope and social impact of their efforts. The Champions of Digital Literacy Inspiration Award is given in recognition of the visionary leadership required to transform communities and nations through digital literacy initiatives.
